A Real Friend in Anacostia, Washington, DC | TJ the Undertaker

We live East of the Anacostia River and we love our neighborhood and neighbors! We were especially close to our friend TJ/the Undertaker! He was known for picking up trash every morning. As he said, 365 days a year, even on Christmas! It makes such a difference to have a street free of litter.

TJ kept the street clean and he also kept an eye on us, our house, and packages! When one of John’s friends picked me up, TJ made sure I was safe before he let me get into the car. And when John had to work, TJ shoveled the walk for me. I will never forget a hot summer night, John and I had music playing through the open windows on our record player, and TJ told us a big tale of how he got the nickname The Undertaker! It still makes me laugh thinking about it! He was a good friend and neighbor!

TJ and I have birthdays that are 10 days apart. For the last couple of years we have enjoyed having a little birthday party to celebrate with TJ and our neighbors!

Unfortunately, TJ passed away in January. He had a tricky home life and it seems like TJ is what connected all of us together! We are saddened that today John won’t be picking up ribs and a birthday cake! We miss him so much!
